Generally, I don’t buy Portable Pets. I prefer the Pet Pairs, because for the same money you can get 2 pets, instead of 1 pet and a container. But I broke tradition to get this seahorse, because we don’t have any seahorses.

While I was willing to buy a Portable Pet at the regular price, no way would I buy one at the crazy inflated prices, so I was lucky to find several of these pets at Toys R Us in August 07. I don’t know if they just released some more or where they came from, but keep your eyes open and check the LPS section whenever you stop by the store. I was quite surprised, as I thought these were totally sold out long ago.

As far as the pet goes, I’m not disappointed. The seahorse is very cute. He’s mostly orange, with purple and green accents. His antennae are short and stubby, so they shouldn’t break off. The aquarium is fine. It is clear with green edges at the top and bottom, which are decorated with purple flowers. There is a little metal post in the middle, which attaches to the seahorses magnet. The can of food is pretty useless – it’s just a small pink plastic cylinder that will get lost pretty quickly.

Bottom line – cute pet. Keep your eyes open at the retail stores, and you might be surprised at the “rare” pets you might find.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to note, is not to assume your child is safe and secure if you dash out of site for a moment. My daughter leans so far forward in the chair now (but is unable to reach the floor with her feet), that the entire cloth back just comes forward with her, since she’s strapped in. No big deal I thought, until…I left the room for a moment, and when I returned, she was crawling on the floor! I have NO idea how my little Houdini did it, but I had her buckled in…and the waist strap was still buckled! The chair wasn’t even overturned! There she was nearby examining our heat register in the floor. We were VERY lucky since there were other non-baby-safe items within her reach and the door to the room was open…and the house not yet completely baby-proofed. My husband and I were in utter amazement and the only thing we could come up with is that she leaned so far forward to reach something on the ground in front of her, that her body just folded over itself and she simply somersaulted out of the chair…her legs sliding out of the belt (and it’s on the tightest setting…but still doesn’t fit as snug as I think it should…but I never thought THAT would happen). The chair must have just rocked back into it’s upright position…and there she was crawling around happy-go-lucky; unscathed by the event.

I still think the chair is a good thing…will last longer than a bouncer. However, NOW, if I have to dash out of site for a moment, I make sure the rocker is in the non-rocking position so that it doesn’t lean with her if she tries to reach forward too far.

This just seems to be an awkard stage to get it’s best use.

I like to listen mothers all around me speaking about their babies, about how naughty they are, about how funny and about how their time is completely consumed by the little marvel God sent them. It is lovely to listen to such stories, because you know they tell you such stories from all their hearts and that they try by telling this, to actually free themselves for a minutes of the responsibility of taking care of the little one and recharge batteries by sharing common experiences.

As I have said, all the time I hear how the baby doesn’t leave time for anything else, how mothers must look all the time to the child, watch and survey, not being able to even take a shower until the husband gets home.

I know that, it is not easy to solve such problems, time does not stretch as much as we’d like, but there are solutions. I have heard a friend of mine explaining how by purchasing an exersaucer she gained extra time to do the dishes, take a shower, etc. OK, it didn’t solve the problem, it couldn’t, because no matter where you put the baby, he will soon need attention and will start to cry, but for shorter periods of time, you, as a mother gain autonomy. You will not be forced to keep an eye on the baby all day long, not knowing where your child will be in the next second, at least you know that once you put him in that activity center, he will be in the same exact spot next time you look.

OK, you’ll say, will the baby like the idea? Won’t he get bored? Well, I guess depends from baby to baby. Well, if a few days ago I was speaking about an exersaucer for boys, Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me – Tea Party is for sure one for girls.

Of course, you can say this just by looking at it. Pink, red and yellow and a bit of green, that’s a combination that girls will immediately love!

I have seen on the internet and all around me people pro and against exersaucers. It’s OK, I guess, it is normal, as with everything in life, some people love and some people hate particular products, so why would exersaucers be any different?

There are people against them, considering they are not healthy for their babies. Well, again, some say they are, some say they are not, it’s kind of a religious battle, after all, even if doctors proved that using an exersaucer for your baby does not hurt at all your baby health, in any way. I will speak more about this in a future article, and I will try to explain you what I mean, as good as possible.

However, nobody can deny the advantages they get from using it. Think about the period of free time you as a parent get only by using the exersaucer to make sure your baby is in a fixed position. Think about the fact that a baby will learn so much about various domains, given the large quantity of toys available for the activity centers out there. Various toys with animals, flowers, cars, colors, music, all these expose your baby to a whole new world, helping him or her explore new grownds that would be difficult to explore otherwise.

I would say that there are so many advantages in using an exersaucer that it’s hard not to see them. There were many accidents, they say, because using an baby walker, with babies running down the stairs when parents were not paying attention. This is not possible in this case since the position is fixed, you know that if you put your baby in there, he or she will stay there for a good period of time! Be sure of this. And the time spent in there will be quality time!
